members or returning alumni may remember Alan Strong as the organist for Saint
Mark’s Pro-Cathedral in the 1980s. While living in Hastings, Dr.
Strong taught elementary music in the Hastings Public Schools as well as serving as organist for Saint Mark’s. He
holds the Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and completed both the Master’s and Doctoral degrees
in music education at Indiana University, including organ study with Robert Rayfield. Alan
left Hastings in 1989 to take a position at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas,
teaching undergraduate and graduate music education, with a focus on teaching
the Kodály Concept of music education. While there, he also taught private
organ lessons and performed as organist or keyboard player for a variety of
university choral and instrumental performances. In 1996, Dr Strong performed
as the organ soloist for performances of Poulenc’s Organ Concerto in Huntsville, Houston, and
the Texas Music Educators Association convention in San Antonio. In
2000, he left his teaching position at Sam Houston State to pursue architectural study at Texas A&M University and
recently completed the Master of Architecture degree. While pursuing his new
career in the field of architecture, Dr. Strong plans to remain active as a
church organist. For the past twelve years he has served as the
Organist/Choirmaster for Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Bryan, Texas, serving
as organist for two services each Sunday and directing the parish choir. 3:00 p.m. August 29, 2004
