The High Altar

Saint Mark's High Altar, from which the principle celebrations of the Holy Eucharist on Sundays and Major Feasts are offered, stands at the center of the Sanctuary at the east end of the Pre-Cathedral.

The High Altar was originally attacted to the east wall below the carving of the Reredos. In 1975, the Altar was moved forward, allowing the priest to celebrate the Eucharist from behind it, facing the congregation.

The High Altar is usually adorned with full Frontal that covers it entirely. During Advent and Lent, the frontal is removed to provide a more somber, penitential mood.
